Installing Skills: Claude AI vs The 8020brain

You've got a skill file. Now what?

There are two ways to use skills - in Claude AI directly, or in the 8020brain. Both work. One is dramatically more powerful.

Installing Skills in Claude AI

Claude AI (the web interface) now supports skills natively. Here's how:

  1. Click your profile avatar in the bottom left corner
  2. Choose Settings from the menu
  3. Select Capabilities from the left sidebar
  4. Scroll down to Skills and click the plus/add button

You'll see three options:

  • Create a skill with Claude - Build one through conversation
  • Write skill instructions - Author the skill yourself
  • Upload a skill - Import a .zip, .skill, or .md file

That's it. Claude reads the text of the skill file you gave it and understands when to use it.

It works. You get consistent outputs. Your preferences persist across sessions. For many use cases, this is enough.

Installing Skills in the 8020brain

The 8020brain takes a different approach.

  1. Drop the ZIP in your downloads folder - Or anywhere you like
  2. Tell the 8020brain where it is - "Install the skill from ~/Downloads/my-skill.zip"
  3. The 8020brain handles the rest - It extracts the files to the right location, validates the structure, and confirms it's ready
  4. Run a test - "Try out the new skill" and watch it work

Same skill. Same format. But now it's operating with your full context.

Why the 8020brain is Different

Here's what changes when you run skills in the 8020brain:

Your Business Context is Always There

The 8020brain knows your clients, your projects, your preferences. A skill that generates reports doesn't just follow a template - it pulls in the right data, uses the right tone, references the right context.

Your Tools are Connected

The 8020brain has access to whatever you've set up - Google Sheets, project management tools like Asana or Trello, communication platforms, data sources. A skill can actually do things, not just generate text.

Your History Matters

The 8020brain remembers what you've done before. A skill for weekly reporting knows what you reported last week. A skill for client communication knows the context of previous conversations.

Skills Can Build on Each Other

One skill might research, another might draft, a third might format and publish. In the 8020brain, they work together naturally because they share context.

The Context Advantage

Claude AI running a skill is like giving someone a detailed instruction manual and asking them to follow it.

The 8020brain running a skill is like giving that manual to someone who already knows your business, has access to your systems, and understands the bigger picture.

Same instructions. Wildly different results.

A skill that says "draft a client update" in Claude AI will give you a generic template. In the 8020brain, it pulls in recent project updates, references relevant data, matches your communication style, and produces something you could actually send.

Which Should You Use?

Use Claude AI Skills When

  • You want portable, shareable workflows
  • The task is self-contained
  • Context isn't critical

Use 8020brain Skills When

  • Business context matters
  • You need access to connected tools
  • The workflow spans multiple systems
  • Output quality depends on knowing your specifics

Most people start with Claude AI skills because they're simpler. But once you see what's possible with full context, you rarely go back.

The skill format is the same either way - that's the beauty of it. Build once, run anywhere. But where you run it determines what it can do.

Start with Claude AI if you're new to skills. Graduate to the 8020brain when you're ready for the full power.
